We didn’t worry about Velcro babies until we had one or two of our own! Of course, babies love being held close, which is why baby-wearing is so magical. Not only do we end up getting hands-free snuggles, but we can also perform other equally important tasks, like drinking water, cleaning, working, and even eating. However, navigating the ins and outs of using a traditional carrier gets trickier as they get older, and it even started taking a toll on our backs. That’s when we began researching the best hip seat carrier options, and we can safely say that they have been lifesavers. Toddlerhood wasn’t necessarily the end of baby-wearing, as hip carriers allowed us to pick up and put down our little ones quickly.

What’s more, they provided tons of additional support for our arms and backs as we toted our toddler around. To that end, here’s a detailed guide to the best hip carriers we found to be the best for Velcro babies.

Momtory Safety-Certified 6-in-1 Baby Carrier

We begin with the Momtory Safety-Certified 6-in-1 Baby Carrier, which was a versatile baby carrier that carried our little ones from infancy to toddlerhood. Crafted from 100 % premium cotton, this carrier offered six carrying positions, allowing us to find a position that was best suited for us. We especially loved the oodles of convenient pocket storage, where we could store not just the baby’s essentials but also our keys, phone, and wallet. Rounding things up was the exclusive drool bib design from the brand, which allowed us to care for our babies even better.

Pros

  • This carrier offered gentle support.
  • It allows for even distribution of the baby’s weight.
  • It was ergonomic.

Cons

  • Back comfort is so-so.

Plus, we had our hands free to do chores while keeping close contact with our babies. We especially appreciated the wide hip seat, the thick, padded shoulder straps, and the extra-wide waist belt. All these worked together to better distribute our babies’ weight around our waists and shoulders, reducing back stress immensely.

SUNVENO Baby Hipseat Ergonomic Baby Carrier

10

The SUNVENO Baby Hipseat Ergonomic Baby Carrier was excellent for relieving our back pain when we carried the babies. This ergonomic baby carrier had a weight limit of 40 lbs/18 kg. However, what we liked the most were the double shoulder straps, which allowed us to shift weight from the shoulders to the waist and back, making it more comfortable and stronger for us to carry babies. Since the hip carrier evenly distributes weight, it greatly reduces the strain on the abdomen, waist, and back, providing extra support. Thanks to the 3-in-1 versatile use, we could easily switch between the full carrier mode, the shoulder strap mode, and the hip mode. Wrapping things up is the one-handed buckle system for safe and fast wearing.

Pros

  • The fabric is lightweight and breathable.
  • It had multiple storage pockets for baby and parent essentials.
  • The lightweight EPP filling ensures easy carrying and durability.

Cons

  • It was expensive.

Momcozy Baby Carrier

4

Best for lower back support. The Momcozy Baby Carrier gave our backs a break with a strap wider than any other hip carriers we’d ever seen. Designed to be super-supportive for the lumbar region, the wide belt was also C-section friendly after we’d healed. Thanks to the additional padding around the seat part of the belt and with it being entirely covered in strong Velcro, it gave us a snug belly-band feel. For additional stay-in-place power and security, the buckle also featured a sliding tab that locked to prevent any accidental unbuckling. Besides the fact that it came in multiple colors and pattern options, the hip carrier also offered us four ways to carry our babies. Finally, it was suitable for babies with an age range of 6-36 months or babies weighing 45 lbs/20 kg. Did you know that we could also use it as a nursing support pillow from the baby’s birth? Yep.

Pros

  • The wide belt offered more lumbar support.
  • With the large seat, the baby was very comfortable.
  • The in-built storage was very useful.
  • We loved the multiple size-inclusive options.

Cons

  • It could get hot under the band when it’s warmer.

Ergobaby Alta Hip Seat

3

Most versatile. Ergobaby makes some of our favorite baby carriers, and the Ergobaby Alta Hip Seat is a 2-in-1 version that didn’t disappoint at all. Just like the Tushbaby carrier on this list, this one also converts to a baby carrier. However, what made it different was that the carrier attachment came with the waist seat, making it ultra-versatile. What’s more, it is safe to use for babies aged four months or more or weighing 12 lbs/5.4 kgs up to 45 lbs/20 kg. Costing around USD 117, the Alta offered us more bang for our buck since we could use it longer. Between the two configurations, we could use it in four different ways: just the hip carrier alone, with the baby carrier piece attached in two ways, and the infant mode. If that wasn’t enough, it’s also been certified as “Hip Healthy” by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. Rounding things up were the in-built storage pockets that allowed us to stash essentials such as our keys and phones.

Here’s a detailed YouTube video review of the product.

Pros

  • This hip carrier was very easy to use.
  • It came with a “Hip Healthy” ergonomic seat, which is very important.
  • It converted to a carrier.

Cons

  • The carrier attachment was a bit tricky to remove.

Regalo Hip Carrier

2

Best value for money. Costing just under $40, the Regalo Hip Carrier was one of the most affordable picks on this list. This straightforward, no-fuss hip carrier was perfect for our Velcro babies. Firstly, it was safe to use with tots who were at least six months old and could sit unassisted. Secondly, the wide waistband offered a snug fit that supported our backs very well. While it didn’t have all the bells and whistles of some other products on the list, besides the small waistband pocket, we loved the simple, straightforward design that made it super easy to carry around and use. Our favorite part, though, was the grippy seat material, which helped keep the baby in place. Finally, the waistband pocket could store pacifiers and our keys.

Pros

  • The hip carrier was very affordable at USD 40.
  • We loved the grippy seat material that held even squirmy babies in place.
  • The wide waistband offered more support.

Cons

  • The maximum weight limit is only 25 lbs.

Tushbaby Hip Seat Carrier

1

Best overall. The Tushbaby Hip Seat Carrier sits at the top of this list for more reasons than one. It was not only supportive and comfortable to use, but it was also super versatile and packed with convenient features. Although lightweight (weighing just less than a pound), the carrier was sturdy and took a ton of the weight off of our arms when we held our babies. What’s more, it fit comfortably around our waist, with the non-slip material of the pad that the baby sat on keeping them in place. Thanks to the in-built storage, the entire contraption acted as a fanny pack of sorts where we could store essentials. Finally, we also loved how long we could use the Tushbaby carrier, starting at 6 months and going up to when our tot was 36 months (or 45 lbs/20 kg)!

“We loved the versatility of this carrier, also using it as a fanny pack, storage purse, a traditional baby carrier, and even a nursing support pillow.”

Keedoz

Pros

  • This product offered lumbar and back support.
  • We loved the versatility and style of this carrier.
  • This hip seat carrier was approved by a chiropractor and paediatrician.

Cons

  • We couldn’t use it hands-free.

Our Verdict!

Choosing a single product from such a long list of amazing carriers can be challenging. That’s why we’ve chosen a smaller, more specialized list to help you make a decision.

  • Best value for money:

How To Choose The Best Baby Hip Carrier?

Comfort

The entire point of having a baby hip carrier was to help us carry our babies and tots more comfortably as they got older and, thus, heavier. So, our top priority was being comfortable when we went about choosing the best picks on this list. We made sure that the carrier didn’t dig uncomfortably into our hips when we wore it. What’s more, we also ensured that the shoulder straps, if any, were padded for maximum comfort.

Easy Use

Hip carriers are different from traditional baby carriers due to having a different function and design. Since the entire point of having baby hip seat carriers is to make our lives easier, we ensured that the ones on this list were simple and easy to use without taking up too much time to put on ourselves.

Size Inclusive

Last but not least, hip carriers have been designed to fit around one’s natural waist. However, not all of them fit all types and kinds of bodies. To that end, we paid special attention to carriers being size-inclusive when we were choosing the ones we included on this list.

Are hip seat carriers hands-free?

No, we needed to keep an arm around the baby unless we specifically wore a model that converted to a hands-free carrier, like Ergobaby Alta or Tushbaby.

Can I use a hip carrier for toddlers?

Yes, hip carriers actually begin to be suitable for babies with strong neck and head control around 4-6 months and can be used until the baby reaches its weight limit (usually 36 lbs/16 kg).

How long can you wear a hip carrier?

Don’t wear hip carriers for extended sessions; stick to wearing them for around 1-2 hours for doing household tasks or quick errands.
